Chicago Style: The Evolution and Impact of Chicago Public Schools

During Mayor Rahm Emanuel's tenure, 50 Chicago Public Schools were closed, displacing approximately 11,000 students around the city. While the administration claimed these closings were necessary to address concerns about CPS budget and facility standards, many have criticized the mayor for this decision. So how have these closures and cuts affected Chicago communities? What plans do the current mayoral candidates have for CPS? And how best can we fix our schools? Join the Chicago Style events committee as we welcome Elaine Allensworth of the UChicago Consortium on School Research for a conversation on the dynamics and political impact of CPS. Dinner provided. Chicago Style is a student-led event series that delves deeply into the big issues of Chicago and Illinois politics. Past speakers have included prominent local elected officials, policymakers, political operatives, journalists, and community organizers.
