Chicago's longest-running singer-songwriter showcase, featuring 4 Chicago artists playing intimate songs 'in the round' followed by a full headline set from our featured artist. Hosted by singer-songwriter, Sam Wahl, join us on the last Wednesday of every month at Wise Fools Pub. Date: Wednesday August 28th Time: 8pm (doors 7pm) Cost: $7 The summer might be coming to an end, but Get Off The Couch is just getting hotter and hotter, and August's showcase might just be the hottest yet! We are absolutely thrilled to welcome back a band who wowed our audience when they last headlined 16 months ago, and will once again be our featured artist - if you missed them last time, don't make the same mistake twice... MILES NIELSEN & THE RUSTED HEARTS!!! Not only are we lucky to have our next artist on our GOTC stage for the first time, but Chicago is also very lucky to have stolen such a talent away from New York where he was making huge waves on the local music scene... ACE REPORTER Making his second appearance in the rounds is a young man who is part of one of the most exciting up and coming bands on the Chicago scene, and we are very excited to have him back on our stage, LEE KETCH (of MOONER) Finally, another newcomer to our stage, originally a five piece band, they regrouped two years ago as an acoustic duo, we're very happy to welcome... NINE MILES WEST MILES NIELSEN & THE RUSTED HEARTS Songs. Songs are the key. Miles Nielsen has been writing them for as long as he can remember. Good, bad, great yeah he's covered all those bases. For some, music is something in the background, or in the corner of the bar, or merely something that lives on the other side of the dial a magic diversion created to pass the time in the car. For Miles Nielsen, music is as much a part of his life as the act of taking a breath, every experience, every conversation, every dream is a potential song in the making. Miles's songs provide that sense of yearning and ownership. You want to have another record, another song you want to hit rewind you want to know more about this world created in song by Mr. Nielsen. A captivating wordsmith, instrumentalist, and creator of hooks rare indeed, but present in the person of Miles Nielsen. It would be hard to imagine that the years spent honing his craft throughout the bars and music halls of the Midwest, were not leading to something bigger, something permanent. His latest release, Miles Nielsen presents the Rusted Hearts certainly occupies a space of permanence these songs are not mere throwaway pop songs but, rather explorations and declarations of a mastery of style and substance, destined to fall into regular rotation on the turntables of fans new and old for years to come. What is next? Like with any other prediction no one can say. Gifts like Miles's come along very infrequently, and one can only hope that his ability to be so "in the now" listening for the songs spoken in the everyday world will continue to grow. Then maybe that "more" we are looking for, will be given to us via that very key we yearn for through Songs. http://milesnielsen.com/ -------------------- ACE REPORTER A rooftop overlooking Manhattan's Fifth Avenue. A fleabag motel on the banks of the Susquehanna River. A bus winding through sleepy Chicago suburbs. A book-filled bedroom. A sculpture garden in Washington, D.C. These are the memories that inhabit Ace Reporter's debut LP, Yearling. They are memories from a single year, one that musician Chris Snyder spent writing and recording one new song every day. In 2010, after the breakup of his longtime band The States, Snyder, a songwriter, composer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist based in Brooklyn, embarked on what he called the threesixfive project. Each day came with a mandate for the musician to start and finish a new track. From this burgeoning collection of songs, four EPs emerged, which Snyder who began playing violin at age four and landed his first singing gig as the featured boy soprano on the soundtrack for The Crow eventually transformed into a full-length album culled from the experiences and inspirations that propelled him through that year. Yearling was recorded in a converted barn in upstate New York in the spring of 2011. The idea was to take ten of the best songs from Snyder's massive collection and imbue them with greater life and augmented instrumentation. "During the threesixfive project, I had two hours every evening to write, record, and mix a new song," Snyder says. "This meant that I had to give up on premeditation whatever happened when I sat down to write became the song, period." The album has the effect of a kaleidoscope, where Snyder's poetic lyricism and evocative imagery draw the songs together to create a collection that tells the story of a year, each song refracting a different memory of a time and place. http://yearling.fm/ ------------------- LEE KETCH (of MOONER) I'm going with this one from their hilarious Bio page: "Comprised of former members of New Zealand black metal group Crib Deth and Atlanta art-rockers Yoko Bono, Mooner perfectly blend improvisational savagery, post-punk wit, and pre-classical silence. Lead guitarist and songwriter Lee Ketch (better known by his Crib Deth pseudonym "Stainmaker") tempers sissy lyrics with brutal riffs buried amid structures so complex, you might ask yourself why you don't just stop listening to this shit and go play chess already." - Kit Shields, Chicago, IL http://www.moonerband.com/ ------------------- NINE MILES WEST After a three-year hiatus, Nine Miles West, originally a 5-piece rock 'n blue outfit, regrouped in late 2011 as an acoustic duo. Original members Jean Iversen (lead vocals) and Gino Sigismondi (guitars), who have collectively played in over a dozen bands, from Shelivade to Hack to One-Eyed Jacks, may have pared down the arrangements, but manage to deliver each song with more intensity than ever. While the original band drew mostly from Iversen's influences, the new, stripped-down Nine Miles West is a blend of the duo's background, which spans from grunge to Americana to hard rock and punk. The result is a fresh, dynamic sound that marries Iversen's gritty vocals with Sigismondi's earthy acoustic chops. Nine Miles West does a blend of originals and covers. Never predictable, the band may do a soulful version of Mindi Smith's "Come to Jesus" then rip into an old Soundgarden song. Or jump from Adele's rousing "Rolling in the Deep" to the Beatles' intimate "Blackbird." The duo started writing together recently, producing such cuts as the tortured "World Gone Mad" and the surprisingly plaintive "Fly." A reworking of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" has also crept into their set. Expect more surprises in the future from this powerful duo. http://www.reverbnation.com/ninemileswest
