Nancy Ann DeParle, "The ACA and the Transformation of American Health Care"

This event is co-sponsored by the University of Chicago's Insitute of Politics and the Bucksbaum Institute for Clinical Excellence.

For over 30 consecutive years, the MacLean Center has sponsored a seminar series that has examined one key issue in healthcare each year. Previous topics have included: pediatric ethics, controversies in end of life care, global health, healthcare disparities, and medical professionalism. This year's Seminar Series is on Ethical Issues in Health Care Reform.

This week's speaker is Nancy-Ann DeParle, one of the nation’s leading experts on healthcare and regulatory issues, who served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy in the administration of President Obama from 2011 to 2013. Previously, she served as counselor to the president and director of the White House Office of Health Reform, where she led the efforts on healthcare reform, including the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. DeParle was often called the president’s health reform “czar,” and within this capacity she helped write the sweeping law. During the Clinton administration between 1997 to 2000, she administered the Medicare program as the director of the Health Care Financing Administration. She received her B.A. from the University of Tennessee with highest honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. While enrolled at Harvard Law School, she was awarded a Rhodes scholarship. She earned her J.D. in 1983.
