Perinatal mood disorders, especially postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis, have received increased attention in the healthcare arena, research literature, and in the media. In addition, screening for postpartum depression is now supported by legislation at both a state-wide and federal level. However, the discourse around perinatal mood disorders is structured largely by a disease or deficits model that may leave women and their families at a loss for understanding their experience and symptoms, and health care providers uncertain about how to best treat and support pregnant and postpartum women.
