Whether you prefer biking, in-line skating, or cross-country skiing, all can travel the 1.8-mile paved East Branch of the Hickory Creek Bikeway. The bikeway leads from the trailhead at LaPorte Road Access to U.S. Route 30 just east of Wolf Road. The trail, which passes through the 1,542-acre Hickory Creek Preserve, takes you past a number of habitats, each with its own unique flora and fauna. The trail meanders through grassland, floodplain, oak/hickory forest, and finally, over the swift-flowing Hickory Creek. If you prefer a grass trail for hiking, there are two short trails at LaPorte Road Access, 0.25- and 0.5-mile each, that travel alongside a pond and among oaks and hickories. The site, which was renovated in 2009, also offers one picnic shelter which can be reserved for large groups, and a second picnic shelter which will be available for rental in mid-2010. 815-727-8700
